Pharmacogenomic is a new frontier for personalizing your medication to your unique genetics. It is scientific-based, non-invasive testing of your genes to determine how your DNA affects your body’s response to prescription or over-the-counter medications. Depending on your genes, some medications may be ineffective for you or cause side effects. With PGx testing, your medications can be tailored to your genes. This test is a tool for your healthcare provider to identify the right medication at the right dose for you.
You may need the testing because your genes, which are inherited from your parents, carry information that not only determines your characteristics such as eye color or blood type but also influence how you process or respond to medications. It is up to you to take the step to discover your story as it is defined by your genes. Getting answers to your genetics introduces you to an important asset, your individuality.
You and your healthcare provider will receive a personalized Medication Action Plan prepared by a pharmacogenomic-certified pharmacist. This comprehensive report provides information regarding FDA-approved drug-gene interactions, multi-drug-gene interactions with your other prescriptions, herbal and over-the-counter medications. It also provides suggestions for alternative and personalized medications and doses tailored to your genes.
Genetic results are complicated and require a healthcare professional to analyze and put them in perspective with your other medications, lifestyle, and preferences.
Do not make any changes based on your genetic results until you discuss them with your physician/provider. The medication changes are only authorized and indicated once approved by your physician/provider. Your Medication Action Plan can be shared with your physician/provider to guide decision-making on any changes that he/she authorizes.
Once we enter your information and medication list into our software, we can predict if you benefit from testing. In general, you may benefit from testing if:
